Cork is the bark of an oak tree known as Quercus Suber. It is an Evergreen which grows only in areas bordering the Mediterranean Sea, with Portugal and Spain producing about 80% for the rest of the world to use. It is reported that Cork was used as fishing floats in ancient Egypt as early as 2500 BC.

It is said, “ When Mother Nature made Cork, she over designed it “. As the life of the Quercus Suber is about 150 years of production, of a product that offers hundreds of uses, to several generations of people.

The Cork Bark is stripped off two-thirds of the tree about every 9 years. This Cork tree is the only tree that can survive such a procedure, due to a thin layer of protective inner bark. The stripping of the Cork Bark requires expert skill, as not to damage the inner bark, and is performed with a specially designed jacket tool. The harvest is then graded, sold and processed into numerous products.

Cork is important because it’s unique cellular structure has a specific gravity of only 0.25 allowing buoyancy, compressibility, resiliency, frictional quality, low thermal conductivity, ability to absorb vibration, stability, and resistance to penetration of liquids.

The WORD about Cork Thickness – About 80% of Cork comes from Portugal, and since Cork is harvested from Cork trees that normally live at least 150 years – Cork is a Renewable Green Resource. Since the rest of the world uses the metric system for measurements and Cork products are an export of Portugal, the THICKNESS of each cork product is listed in millimeters, NOT inches as we in the United States of America use. For truth and correct measurement we show our CurvCork in mm ( millimeters ) and the approximate or nominal inches. Most companies only show inches, example 1/4” is really 6mm.

So please do not be mislead by reading 1/4” or 1/8”, they are really 6mm or 3mm. Professional Architects and most Interior Designers are aware of this measurement difference and it’s always accepted, it is what, it is. We try to follow through with this measurement system on all our web cork products. Just in case, please remember any where you read 1/4” the cork product is actually 6mm thick. The difference is about 2-3 regular business cards thickness. Remember, if you ever saw a 2×4 lumber the actual measurement is a nominal 1-1/2” x 3-1/2”, but we, Americans refer to this standard piece of lumber as simply a 2×4.

When considering a wall for a Cork tack surface keep in mind the type of Users.

Will the Tack Wall be for small children, high school, college or training facility? The reasons are several; economy with client funds, practical use of the cork, and housekeeping or traffic abuse. WHY?

If most persons height is 4’-8” to 6’-5” then it isa waste of client money to install Cork from the ceiling down to floor, as too many persons cannot see that high to read or review info. So Cork covering 3’ down from the ceiling and 2’ up from the floor is a waste of client money.

If Cork is installed from the floor up, that installation creates a very high risk of damage to the cork toward the floor due to traffic abuse or housekeeping functions. It is better to trim areas not covered in Cork with either paint, vinyl or thick acoustical fabric that can better serve the purpose of the room or facility. It will Save Client Funds.

Decide the wall use, persons and expected heights, traffic and housekeeping.

Horizontal above a chair rail 30” off the floor, offers a 48” Cork height that works for the most typical person heights.

Horizontal installation means NO seams or joints, offering a more pleasing appearance. Vertical installation is still needed in many areas and offers both a finished wall, reduction of sound transmission, and large working area for professional maps, drawings, tack surface for larger multiple hangings, and with decorative trim at joints and perimeter, a unique designer finished wall can be created.

When installing Cork it is suggested too trim the cork with wood, metal or similar border product to protect the edges of cork and keep product tight the top, edges and joints, if needed. Cork will slide off the wall when installed unless Cork is tacked or held in place until the adhesive sets. Another reason to plan for a nice Trim across the top or around the edges is when using Cork above a low chair rail, using a seamless Horizontal installation.

In school classrooms where a full floor to ceiling tack surface or wall bulletin boards is desired, our CurvCork roll offers economy of installation for new construction or remodel projects. Cork is often specified by Architects as a Cork wall covering and / or described as a Cork wall for commercial projects. Our Natural CurvCork #486 can be used on a Traning Room wall, K-5 Artwork walls, 6-12 Grade Schools for Print Media Display, Religious Gathering and Educational Facilities, or on any project where a large tack Surface or oversize Cork Bulletin Board is required.

WIUSA.com is a direct national supplier to architectural cabinet and millwork shops, general contractors, schools and churches, governments, military and commercial projects, and various other endusers.
